Thought leadership

The concept of thought leadership is attributed to Joel Kurtzman, editor in chief of Strategy + Business Magazine. In 1994, he used the term to describe individuals and organisations who deeply understands their business, the needs of their customers, and the broader marketplace in which it operates.

Early thought leaders were Charles Handy who advanced the idea of the ‘portfolio worker’, Mitsubishi president Minoru Makihara and Gary Hamel of London Business School who along with C.K. Prahalad showed thought leadership in corporate strategy through their use of the term ‘core competence’.
